Empowering The People: Maine GOP Calls For Eliminating State Income Tax

Frustrated with the legislature’s rejection of a proposal to amend the state’s constitution to rid the state of income tax by 2020 and replace it with a broad-based consumption tax, Maine’s GOP passed a resolution this week that firmly supports taking the issue to the ballot box and letting the voters decide. In fact, the party’s unanimous support of the resolution was stated in the strongest terms possible and authorized Chairman Rick Bennett to “dedicate and deploy any and all party resources he deems necessary to support Maine voter referenda to phase out and eliminate the Maine income tax.”

Eighteen states have provisions for initiated constitutional amendments, made possible through legislative referral or ballot initiative process. In a few states, such as Illinois, regulations make it nearly impossible to take a proposed amendment to the vote of the people.
